All About Me

       Hi, I am Liam.

I am from St Bernadettes school and I am in Year 6 this year.

I am blind and use a cane when I walk to help me find and avoid things in front of me.

I do my writing in braille on a machine that looks a bit like an typewriter called a Perkins.

This is what Grade 1 Braille looks like but the dots are raised off the page so I can read them with my fingers:

My favourite animal is a dog. Dog's live in kennels. I like listening to dogs bark and howl.
I would like to visit Sudan as we have been studying Sudan at school and I like new languages and I would like to hear them speak Arabic.
I play the drums and I like the 'Burn the Barn' Song.

  1. Kia ora Liam!!
It's Zipporah from Class. I really like the way you told us about yourself and why you use the cane. I thought that the cane was for you lead some place but it's pretty for you to help you find and avoid things. It is actually cool when you read the letter with the dots I also thought that you just find out the letters with the dots tracing it.

Well done Liam!! Keep it up!

  2. Hey there Liam! My name is Hana and I'm a year 5 from Yaldhurst Model School!

Wow! I've never met anyone like you before! And using a cane to help you watch where you're going. As Zipporah said, It's really helpful for you because it is a very good tool for helping you avoid objects in your way!

Reading the dots on the keys on the Perkins is really smart! It probably would have taken me a looooong time to learn the read the dots like that! But I can imagine that you would learn a LOT quicker than me!

How long did it take you to learn to feel the dots and write like that? And were you born blind? or did something happen?
